Arts & Crafts bowl. Unknown country and maker.

I have this c20th silver Arts & Crafts covered sugar bowl which has completely stumped me, to the point where I'm not even sure which continent it's from! I don't believe it is Australian, Indian or Chinese (though of course I could easily be wrong), so then the most likely place is probably Eur...

Re: Eastern European Box - Identification request

Hi Oel,

Well, so it is! I've misplaced my Tardy, so it may well be in there, but I would never have found it on-line. Thanks very much indeed.

Best regards,

Silverk.

Eastern European Box - Identification request

Hello to the forum, I have this rather nice box with a sunburst design which I think is possibly from the German/Eastern European area. The original owner, one Carl Schenck, lived in the first half of the 19th century, having been born in Burgstadt and died in Riga. I can't identify the city mark, w...

Re: Could do with some help on this Persian/Iranian Box

Hi Damon, Thanks very much for your follow-up. I've used your input to try to find additional information and have come up with nothing that adds much to what you have identified already. Perhaps the only thing that might be suggestive is that Jahrami is often associated with Parvaresh and he seems ...

Re: Chinese goblet

The Chinese characters represent the maker's workshop (rather than the retailer). I think this is probably 怡安 for Yi An, a Shanghai-based workshop.

Re: Could do with some help on this Persian/Iranian Box

Hi Daman,

Thank you very much for that input. I'm impressed that you managed to match the Persian characters! That moves me forward, though I can't find any relevant reference to Sirakian as yet. As you say, needs someone with a good command of Persian.

Best regards,

Could do with some help on this Persian/Iranian Box

I have this rather nicely decorated Persian box, fairly typical of the genre, which I think may be a cigarette box made around 1950/1960. One of its marks is '84' and I'm aware that there is some discussion as to whether this represents a purity of 84 Zolotniks, or 84%. However, my question is wheth...

Re: Russian cigarette case - maker please?

Thank you both for all the extra detail. It is much clearer now and I would agree that the style would put it in the late 1920s.

Re: Russian cigarette case - maker please?

Hi Mart, This sounds like a quite complicated subject area! At the risk of asking you too many questions, I'd like to try to clarify a couple of things you said: 1) Previously you said: 'This type of brand is for the period 1927-1954' and then in your last message you said 'The stamp "ЮТ" ...

Re: Russian cigarette case - maker please?

Thank you Mart for your lightening quick reply and for your trouble in identifying the maker. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much silver for 'ЮвелирТорг' during those dates visible on my internet searches!

Many thanks,

Silverk.

Russian cigarette case - maker please?

I have this Russian cigarette case assayed in Odessa (now in Ukraine of course), made I guess around the 1920s. Would someone be kind enough to identify the maker Ю.T for me, and if possible tell me his approximate working dates? Apart from the number 207 on each leaf of the case, the only marks are...

Thank you Ubaranda and Silverstone for that extra information.

I note the references to Captains spoons, which helps me as I have one of those as well.

Thanks again to all who have helped me.

Re: Small 19th century Tallin (Reval) basket?

Thanks very much indeed for pinpointing the maker! Is there anything about the mark that would identify whether it was made during his first or second period? As for the piece itself, it's excellent workmanship in my opinion. It's fantastic that we have the expertise on this forum to answer such que...

Re: Swedish box - completely stumped

That's splendid! The unregulated font for the date is a bit of a revelation for me. Now I know who he is, I've looked for other items of his on the net and his font varies, even for the same year.

Many thanks,

Silverk.

Small 19th century Tallin (Reval) basket?

I have this charming little item in the shape of a breadbasket, but I would guess is a salt. I believe it is Russian/Estonian, from Tallin (Reval), perhaps early 19th century and a maker whose initials seem to me to read HC. I would be grateful if a forum member could identify all the marks for me! ...

Swedish box - completely stumped

Hi, I have been completely stumped by this Swedish box. - I think the date is indicated by what looks like N2, but it's the wrong typeface. - I couldn't find a Swedish maker G.A. - I assume the anvil and hammer is the town mark, but the nearest I can find is Eskilstuna in Tardy, but the anvil in the...

Austro-Hungarian niello case - maker?

I have this nice Austro-Hungarian niello case which has assay marks for 1867-1872. In addition, it is stamped 'FHS' inside the cap, but I can't find any other markings. Hopefully, someone on the forum could confirm, or otherwise, that this is the maker and any details about who he was. Many thanks, ...

Re: Maker request on round French box

Ah, thanks very much for clarifying that. That must have been a real pain for the makers who didn't change their marks! By the way, and at the risk of prolonging this thread, now that I know the name, I found another reference to him on the forum but there's a slight difference in date, namely that ...

Re: Maker request on round French box

Thanks very much indeed for that very detailed response, and for replying so quickly. Do you have any idea which of the three marks is on the box?

It's a little older than I thought; amazing that what I think is the original gilding is so well retained.
