Re: Worn makers mark help
The pic shows all 4 marks, the date stamp, the partial lion passant, the city mark (I believe) and the very rubbed makers mark showing only the faint remains of either a W or M.

Re: Worn makers mark help
Further to this I believe the hallmark ends in a W or maybe starts with an M?
The style of cellar reminds me of Edward Wood but the partial hallmark does not really correspond.
Would anyone hazard some possibilities?

Removing polish residue
I have an issue where I bought a sterling silver salt cauldron which has quite an intricate, fairly deep pattern. in the depths of this pattern is what I believe to be the remains of some sort of silver polish. It is white in colour. What is the best way to remove this? I am hesitant to use any type...

Worn makers mark help
Hello, I am hoping someone in the forum can help with identifying the makers mark on this Georgina period sterling salt cauldron that came out of London. It is well rubbed so I am likely not going to be able to definitively identify it but I am hoping for a miracle! It has the date mark for 1749 so ...

Once again no city mark on English Georgian period sterling silver
Hello, Here we have another spoon with no city mark. The spoon weighs 39g. Is this also a case of being too small to warrant a city mark?. I am assuming provided this was assayed in London that the date stamp is for 1821? I am unsure of the makers mark here so any help there would also be appreciate...

No city marks on English Georgian period sterling silver
Hello, Lately I have noticed a couple of items either online or owned with no city hallmark. The hallmarks that are present (date letter, lion passant and duty mark) seem to be of English origin. Is anyone able to shed some light on the omission of city marks on English Georgian sterling in general?...

Re: Patina on silver
Numismatists would agree in whole. Removing the patina on old silver coins would destroy the value.

Thank you Trev & Steve, I will consider this case closed.
I totally missed on the whole duty mark thing, lesson learnt.
Thanks for the fast response. I will scale the pictures down a little next time.

Date letter "e" - 1780 or 1820?
Hi there, I am having issues identifying the London date mark on this sterling silver salts. Its either 1780 or 1820 I guess. From what I have read it should not have a duty mark, which it does not, the city mark should be the same for both dates (crowned leopard), I believe even the silversmiths ma...
