Question on brightcut engraving
This may be a stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyway. I have seen some very well done engraving on spoons and holloware. Did an engraver use a template to mark the general outline of the engraving, or did they just wing it from experience? There are always slight variations to each piece, bu...

Re: Why are there so many unmarked coin silver pieces ?
Thank you for the replies. I am seeing a number of American coin silver spoons from around 1800 unmarked. Sets of coffin end spoons, some earlier - 1780's-90's, etc. Those are really what I was asking about. Was just curious. Tks

Re: Why are there so many unmarked coin silver pieces ?
Thank you for the replies. Our rulers always want their taxes.
I was attempting to ask specifically about .900 American coin silver items where the marks are usually only a makers initials. There is quite a bit of unmarked American coin silver.

Why are there so many unmarked coin silver pieces ?
Wonder if anyone would know why many early coin silver pieces are unmarked. Based on my limited knowledge of the methods of fabricating items - quite a bit of work went into making each piece - especially if it is bright-cut engraved. Did silversmiths leave things unmarked for a reason... or did the...

Re: Coffin teaspoon marked JT ?
Thank you WEV. I had looked at Winterthur but did not see this -- and went back and tried another link to get into their digital collections -- and there it was. I was hoping it might be Trott and there are a few people with the JT initials (researched at your site) working around the time period th...

Coffin teaspoon marked JT ?
Recently acquired a set of coffin teaspoons marked JT and can't locate this mark. Would anyone know who this maker is? My library is limited and can't find it online. Any info appreciated. Tks. https://i.postimg.cc/QCjB674s/jtmarkcoffinteaspoon.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/vZCcJkq0/jtfront.jpg

Re: Reference Books for Bermuda & West Indies ?
Thank you. Is there a book for that general area... all of the islands in that region? My search has turned up nothing so far but someone must have put something together. There are mentions here of various smiths from various islands... but the photos are gone and many I've never seen listed anywhe...

Reference Books for Bermuda & West Indies ?
Would anyone know of any reference books for early silver (1700's-1800's) from Bermuda & West Indies? I know there is "Made in Bermuda", but are there any other books which show makers and their marks for the various other locations that comprise this area ?

Re: Silver marrow scoop dated 1821 - maker and origin ?
I think it is likely Provincial - Irish or Scottish. I was trained to look at marks to make connections to makers in exact fashion. This doesn't match the known Carden Terry font/style exactly - but it could be by him. Somewhere out there is a matching mark on another piece of silver that will event...

Re: Silver marrow scoop dated 1821 - maker and origin ?
https://i.postimg.cc/rmSsJpTB/ms1.jpg Yes it has scoops at both ends. It is also known as a "reversible" scoop where the scoops are opposite directions of each other. I was thinking that there is the possibility that this was made somewhere else and imported to Denmark. I know that it rea...

Re: Silver marrow scoop dated 1821 - maker and origin ?
Thank you for the reply. Hopefully there is someone out there who has seen something like this before from that area. I looked up shooting clubs and there is the Royal Danish Shooting Society and maybe the engraved cross signifies something related to them. The letters to the left of the makers mark...

Silver marrow scoop dated 1821 - maker and origin ?
I am trying to track down the origin and maker for a silver marrow scoop recently acquired. It is 8.5" long and has the mark of GT or CT and is dated 1821. Someone thought it might be a wedding engraving or possibly a shooting society award from Norway or somewhere in Scandinavia. Any info appr...

Re: 17th century round silver plate
You might try someone who is knowledgeable in coinage / money. Look up "Martin Armstrong" who is one of the worlds most knowledgeable people about coins/currency. He may or may not be willing to help.... or someone else like him...
