Re: A set with a cup and a plate - possibly middle eastern
I see now in the other post that "90" was sometimes used for 0.900 finesse in Iran/Persia. Could that be the case here too?

A set with a cup and a plate - possibly middle eastern
Hello everyone, I cam across a set of very small, expresso sized cups and plates with the marks I can not identify. The marks are not the most common "standard" marks listed on the "World Marks" pages of the web site. Browsing through this forum was not successful, so I am asking...

Thanks for the confirmation.
(I know the meaning of 18 G, that was not the question).

Small fork with "24" mark without "g"
I am well aware of 12+12 marks on a silverplate, and have seen such items. This little fork has "24" marked on it, and goes not have a "g". Could this be one of the Danish marks or is it still a silver plated item but without "g" on the mark? I could not identify other ...

Please confirm my identification #2
Hello, This is the second Item I would like to ask experts for help and for verification of my conclusions. Again, a spoon which tests as silver but is likely silver plated with thick layer of plating. Here too, I am not able to make out the makers mark, or even the country of manufacturing. The mar...

Please confirm my identification #1
Hello, I would like to ask experts here to check my conclusions on several silverware items that I have. This is the first of three, a spoon which tests as silver but is likely silver plated with thick layer of plating. Unfortunately, I am not able to make out the makers mark, or even the country of...

Re: Danish (?) Kettle
I would like to resurrect this old thread - can anyone post a link or a reference that describes this old danish system expressing the fineness in lot? Thank youQrt.S wrote:Number 24 is the fineness. In the old days the Danes used a special system for expressing the fineness in lot.

Re: What is the purpose of markings on brass (?) spoons
Thank you both for your contributions. Strangely enough, but I do have an update. Just today I came across two more similar spoons. One was exactly the same as mine, with same two "assay" marks. Another one was slightly different - it had a deep groove on the back of the neck, with the ass...

Salt cellar identification
I would like to hear your opinions on this salt cellar, in particular its possible provenance and time of manufacturing. The metal frame itself has no markings that I could find, and its metal content is unknown to me (not tested), but the coins used for ornament are old silver Danish and Norwegian ...

What is the purpose of markings on brass (?) spoons
Hello again, I came across a pair of old spoons made from what looks like brass or similar copper alloy (not Dirigold) in a design that is very common with Swedish spoons of the late 1700 - early 1800. The exact alloy is unknown to me. Both spoons have strange marks on the back of their necks that d...

Re: Antique Swedish Tankard Hallmark
The two digit mark looks a lot like a NS mark seen on Swedish "nysilver" items (Nickel Silver).

Just to close this discussion - base metal for both spoons is silver.

Re: Unidentified marks on small spoons
Thanks Peter, I did not expect these spoons to stir such critical (in positive sense of the word) discussion. Keep me updated if you learn anything. Thank you again.

Re: Unidentified marks on small spoons
Peter, sorry it took so long, but I do not own jewelers scale. The first spoon weights 7.5 g, the second – 9.1.
As for the composition of base alloy - I believe proper testing is the only answer.
I'll try to do it in the nearest future and will report back.

Re: Unidentified marks on small spoons
Thanks you, Qrt.S for your insight. I now have no doubt about the second spoon provenance (1822, Grönwall), but I am still a bit puzzled by the middle mark, and will check it under the microscope. It is no doubt plated, and has obvious wear showing white metal underneath. I will test what metal it i...
