Re: Dutch Silver Book Shield with Anatomy Lesson
Thanks for this Peter. I'm an interested friend of Doug who posted originally and I had also put this up on the German forum. That's helpful, if a little disappointing. It seems like a substantial piece. What exactly is meant by fantasy marks and what was the purpose behind them? There seems little ...

Re: European? Silver Bookshield Medical
I put this up here after discusing with the owner and didn't know it had also been posted on the Dutch forum, where Peter https://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=55371 kindly wrote : << ... About six year ago I saw this shield for the first time and was asked about these marks. The ma...

Re: French Silver Ear Tubes - Makers mark help please
Hi Aguest,
Thanks. Yes, that all sounds like infallable logic. I'm on it, although nothing on a first internet trawl. Does anyone know of a good resource for Belgium silver maker's marks?

Re: French Silver Ear Tubes - Makers mark help please
Many thanks Trev, That's a good thought. I don't really have the foggiest how these things were done. I'd sort of assumed that this was a makers and that the person who made it stamped their ID on it at the time it was made and that the import must have followed that. It certainly looks as if Discaz...

Re: French Silver Ear Tubes - Makers mark help please
So, reporting back on my solitary journey of discovery, and working on the late 19th C and having ruled out Japan, Russia, Turkey, Italy and UK (on the basis that I have seen nothing even close to this style in online examples). I am working on the assumption that this piece was imported to France f...

Re: French Silver Ear Tubes - Makers mark help please
Oops! It is not a lozenge,it is an oval, which may mean I need to look for a makers mark outside of France. Aside from the Netherlands does anyone know who the French treaty countries were at the end of the 19th century?
Are there any resources I should use?
With thanks.

Re: French Silver Ear Tubes - Makers mark help please
Replying to my own post. I cleaned the silver and I'm pretty sure that the oblong hallmark is the weevil (see updated photos). This was mentioned in an earlier topic http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=31287&p=78106#p78106 which says: "French import mark for silver called ...

French Silver Ear Tubes - Makers mark help please
I have a small pair of silver ear tubes in a fitted leather case which is marked Discazaux Biarritz. A French hallmark set in an oblong which I have not identified and 2) A makers mark in an oval which shows the letters C and D either side of a fir or pine tree. See pics below. http://pwww.phisick.c...

Re: Lozenge master silver mark on eye bath
Hi JayT, Thanks so much for this really helpful information. A month after the intial posting with no replies I had given up hope of finding anything, so I cannot tell you how delighted I was to pick up on your post and very appreciative of your expert knowledge - thanks to Blakstone too. Hi All, I have a French silver syringe which I think is early 19th C and have a couple of makers marks which I am having difficutly identifying. There are marks on the syringe body, the syring ring and the needle. One looks like a bird in a lozenge, the other I am not sure .. an ant? See attached pi...

Lozenge master silver mark on eye bath
Thanks for any help in identifying the master silver maker's mark on this eye bath. I have been advised that le vieillard (the old man) was used from 1818 to 1839. However, the markings within the lozenge have not been identified. It looks to me like 3 chicks over and R and another letter but none o...
