I just found this which leads me to believe that they did both, stamping and lazer engraving.

Thanks for the information. What I find strange is that the X in the oval and date letter are both engraved below the surface instead of raised. Any thoughts on this. Thank you.

Help to identify cufflinks marker and hallmarks
A heavy pair of sterling cufflinks weighing approx 24g. The cufflinks are marked LL in an oval, 925, X in a circle followed by the Birmingham date letter for 1997 a cursive x with a line through the middle. I thought that the LL in the oval looked an awful lot like Links of London but the other mark...
