Re: London silver 1691?

You are right. Seems more like 1695. Hallmark is definitely Samuel Hood.

AG2012 why do you say it is too good to be true?

If you are a collector of tongs you will know that maker's mark and sterling lion passant are normally the only marks present on 18th century examples. Your first maker is GS and almost certainly London. The lion passant is of the type used from 1739 to 1755 but I am not certain about the identity ...

I haven’t bought it. I just only asked what it is.

What kind of hallmark do you think it is? French maybe?

Re: Russian hallmark?

It was advertised as “russian” and also it comes from an ex Soviet state. 85 can be a hallmark for silver in Russia.

Russian "сф" mark ?

I saw an item at an estate sale, that looks a bit strange. The kokoshnik looks like Yakov Nikolayevich Lyapunov used in St. Petersburg 1898-1903 Makers mark is сф Could that be Karl K. Fischer or Samuel Filiander, both active in St.P ? Also, there is a gold mark that also doesn't seem right somehow....

Re: Help identifying city marks

I always check those sections. My other questions were more to know about specifics things to look when seeing russian silver marks and not beeing fooled by very good visual fakes.
Here was a city mark that I never seen, even after looking on the russian section in all pages.
