A candlestick (?) from France
Good afternoon I need help on this one; it is silver plated copper. I suppose it is a candlestick that is missing the pointy metal rod on which the candle would be set. It does not seem to be a church object, but what is the motif on the top part? There is a hallmark on the washer at the bottom, it ...

Re: A French souvenir of Venice
Thank you Jay T! And thank you to all who take their time to share their knowledge on this forum! I was also confused by what I thought was a triple "C". However the hallmark by Claude Louis Jonquoy does not seem to be in the list of the French makers marks menu on the 925-1000 website, ne...

A French souvenir of Venice
Hello All, This time I am looking for the name of the silversmith who has created this elegant souvenir. It is an enameled silver tobacco box.It has a clear French silver hallmark depicting the Minerva head with number 1 on the top right corner (950 silver) However I could not identify the silversmi...

Thank you! Yes....I can see that now.
You really have a sharp eye, or experience...or probably both.

An Italian sugar bowl, only partly identified
Hello! This sugar bowl has the hallmark indicating it is from the Kingdom of Sardinia (1824 to 1872), the "dolphin" mark that identifies its origin in the town of Genoa, but there is a third hallmark that I could not identify: it looks like a water droplet (or a tear...), see second image....

Re: Is this from Italy? or France?
Thank you Amena, You have a sharp eye!! I had looked at all the Italian states hallmarks, but I could not associate it to any. Now that you put them side by side, it looks quite obvious... The lid also has the same mark, I did not include it in my original post, but here it is. What about the very t...

Is this from Italy? or France?
Hello! Another mistery piece...this sugar bowl (?) is in vermeil; I have acid tested it and confirmed it is silver. The general style and the pattern on the edges makes me think it might be from Italy or France, however there is only one hallmark and I could not identify it. It even looks like it co...

Re: Mistery hallmark ?
Great info, thank you ! There is also another picture of an identical item claiming it is from Italy...in any case, I now know what it is and the approximate date. The Apollo is clearly the Roman Belvedere, but I was mislead into thinking it could be French due to the uncanny similarity of the centr...

Re: Mistery hallmark ?
Thank you for your quick reply! I could not find any similar marks in any of the Hanau pages. Generally Hanau silver carry several marks, this item only has the 800 and the mistery mark. That is why I didn't consider Hanau. The woman on the carriage drawn by three horses "feels" French, bu...

Mistery hallmark ?
Hello! I have two almost identical "spoons" (?) with 800 hallmark. One of them also has an additional mark that I could not identify. The origin of such mark is my question to the forum: where is it from? I have looked through the countries that used the "800" mark, but could not...

Re: New formula for silver testing acid ?
Good afternoon, I only found one seller from UK who provides the old formula; bought one bottle and it never arrived...Can you point me to a reliable supplier? I only use the acids on those items that do not have a hallmark; I know that the testing is not 100% reliable, but if there are no hallmarks...

Could this be from Middle East?
Hello ! I have found an unusual spoon with a couple of hallmarks that I have not been able to identify; one of them looks like an Arabic character, but I am not sure...Can somebody tell me more about the origin and, possibly how old it could be? Thank you ! Andrea P.S. I have followed the instructio...

Re: New formula for silver testing acid ?
Thank you for your replies. I do not think I have access to the base elements to make up the test liquid, nor would I try to handle and mix dangerous substances... How do you test small silver objects? Where do you buy the ready to use formula, the one that turns red when in contact with silver (on ...

New formula for silver testing acid ?
Hello! I recently run out of the acid for silver testing and almost all sellers now only propose a new formula. Apparently legislation has changed and the acid that turns red when in contact with silver is no longer allowed. However this new acid needs to be placed on the object, where it will leave...

Re: Mistery holy water font
Thank you, that was a fast reply ! I am from Milan... The only information of pre-1872 Italian hallmarks that I could find is that for Neapolitan silver. Is there a good online resource ? I guess that the hallmark with the head and the letters "GZ" corresponds to the silversmith ? Regards ...
