Sterling, but I think it's plated...
I should be very glad of some help. I have an item which has a mark of a bell in which are the letters - large L possibly and smaller A. Underneath it says STERLING, but under that the marks are very indistinct but look like letters which could end in ...TED. This suggests it is plated, but I though...

Silver overlay trivet
Hi. I am interested in silver overlay and have seen some Webster trivets (usually orchid design). Are these purely for decoration, or can you actually use them to put hot objects on? Does the sterling silver suffer in any way?

The marks are: three shields and a bird's feathered head
In the first shield there is a backward E and forware R
The second shield I can't work out
The third shield looks like a 1 and a 0
