I have seen the crowned 'B' in “Goud- en Zilvermerken van Voet”. I believe that is the mark on this box. Assuming that the ‘IT’ is the maker’s mark, I have used the information in Karel Citroen's book “Dutch Goldsmiths’ and Silversmiths’ Marks and Names Prior to 1812” to narrow down the list of poss...

It has been suggested to me that my box is Dutch and that the crowned letter 'B', is a mark used between 1807 - 1812 denoting payment of duty. Also that the silversmith is Johannes van der Toorn (1747-1832) who was a silversmith in The Hague. Would anyone care to comment please? Is the third mark po...

Do you have the book 'International Hallmarks on Silver collected by Tardy'? There is an 18th century symbol for Amsterdam on page 308. This symbol has three crosses, in a vertical line, with some sort of character which could be a letter below the crosses. It is different from the bottom character ...

Improved Photos
I have posted some better photos of the marks and box in the hope that someone may be able to identify them. I saw the crowned 'B' in Tardy's book but have no access to information on Norwegian hallmarks. This post may belong somewhere else entirely. I believe the box is handmade and hand engraved. ...

If not I may have listed this post in the wrong forum. The IT mark is stamped twic...

Thank you for your reply and information. You have confirmed what I suspected, it is practically impossible to work out who made the buckle. Is James Stamp known to have made buckles? What about all the buckle makers listed in that section of Grimwade. Are their marks listed anywhere. Also I am not ...

I am not sure about that. I think it is a software issue. With even these two books I can now only get as far as the google window with scroll bars, and nothing in it. I can sit there for ages and nothing happens. My computer says the application has stopped reponding. I don't understand why all the...

Help required to identify this stock buckle maker, please.
http://g.imagehost.org/t/0673/Top.jpg http://g.imagehost.org/t/0266/Lion.jpg http://g.imagehost.org/t/0168/Maker.jpg I believe this stock buckle was made in London between 1756 and 1784 as the lion appears to be correct for that period and there is no duty mark. The maker's mark is a little more di...

I am not able to open the E-Books
I am having trouble accessing the E-Books. I haven't been able to open any. If I click on one a new page opens with a square with a white strip at the top and nothing else happens. What are the software requirements to open the E-Books, please?

Query about the 'HP' London hallmark listed on this site
The hallmark HP is listed on this site under the London Makers' Marks Menu. The note next to it states that it is not the mark of Henry Plumpton. The note also refers to Grimwade's entry 3608 which is a very similar mark and listed as unidentified. I would like to know the basis for saying that this...

A response to the article 'Polishing Silver'.
In this site's article Polishing Silver you discuss various methods. My comments are: Surely you mean washing soda rather than baking soda to be used with aluminium foil. I find this method very effective and very gentle. I have been told that museums use it. I have recently collected quite a few pi...

The initials could be either MH or HW. I have not seen a photo of these initials anywhere else. In the book '...
