Antique cigarette case - need help with markings

Post by wegner »

I request someone's assistance with identifying the pictured piece and its maker.
The hallmarks seem to be those of Birmingham. The year hallmark is an A. The makers marks seem to be CSE & CO, but they are difficult to make out.
I would very much like to know when it was made and who made it. I am also not certain the marks are indeed the Birmingham marks. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Pictures of this case are attached.

Where are the photographs?
Could the maker's mark be CSG&Co.?

I can confirm that the mark is that of Charles S Green & Co (I have a piece by them, being a Serviette Ring imported into Australia by Hardy Bros).

Birmingham 1950 is my estimate as to date.

I suspect Webster is on the same train of thought in relation to this piece.

Hello Webster and Waylander,

Thank you very much for your help. Would you possibly know anything more about the company Charles S Green & Co and are you sure the case could not be older?
Thanks again for your help!

History of Charles S Green? Personally I don't know much about them; major manufacturer, but good enough to secure export orders. Try emailing the Birmingham Assay Office - they may be able to help.

As for date? 1950 is the correct date. That particular style of Date Letter is very distinctive.
