German Silver Bound Bible Nurnberg Mark

Post by casteyesupon »

Hello!
I have a silver bound bible that has only 2 different marks. The inside edge is stamped N and 13. The latch is stamped 13. I did see that the N stands for Nurnberg (Nuremberg) and the 13 for .812 silver content. I cannot find any maker’s mark. This is small in size measuring 4” X 3” X 1 1/8”. I have checked the section on pseudo hallmarks with no luck. I am not sure if the bible is original to the cover but it probably dates to late the 1800’s (no date). Are the markings done to deceive or should there be other marks somewhere on this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
Jenny

Good day Jenny,

Looking over your title page, Henry Frowde became publisher of the Oxford University Press (OUP) in 1880. He was responsible for a revised version of the New Testament in 1881. Your title page also indicates NY, OUP opened offices there in 1896. Believe that yöur edition of the New Testament was most likely printed sometime on or after 1896 and is a Protestant edition.

The Madonna with child and IHS (Latinized version of the Greek IHSOUS) for Jesus (Peace be upon Him), are more likely Roman Catholic symbols. May not have been intended for each other but are together now.

Now as to the mark, spotted a some what similar set of marks on the site Silberpunzen Hauptseite, item 5571. Others will have to translate that for you. And no this was not an attempt to deceive, very talented German silversmiths working in an antique style.

5571 unbekannt
Hanau Pseudo (unsicher)

Hope this helps.

Dear Warren,
Thank you so much for all the information you have provided. I did not have any luck connecting to the website you mentioned. I googled Silberpunzen Hauptseite. Is that how I find it? Thanks again!!!

Thank you so much Jorg,

Had added the old link to my favorites some time ago, did not realize there was a new site. Just opened it then tried punching the old numerical code 5571 which does not seem to be used in the current site.

Jenny sorry for the confusion, type HanauPseudo(unsicher) in the search column at the top of the page, no spaces. That should pull up the image and a few other similar marks. Please have a look to see if you agree. Was looking at the way the one is slightly higher than the three with a curve at the top. The crossbar on the N is very thin.

Jorg if you would have a look.

Thanks

Dear Warren and Jorg,
Finally able to get to the site you refer to. Lots of ads and what not so a little confusing. I can't thank you all for all your helpful information and guidance. I see the mark you are referring to although the book cover I have only has 2 marks. So does this mean that it was made for export in Nurnberg at the end of the 1800's?
Best regards,
Jenny

Hello, believe what we have here is what dealers of old books call a "remboitage": a newer book is placed inside an older cover. Judging from the pics I would place this cover in the middle of the 19th century, around 1850/1860, give or take some years. The marks are most likely genuine.

Most silver covers for German bibles or prayer books I have seen in recent years bore no mark at all (while testing positive for silver - whatever that tells us) or had an incomplete set of marks. The reason could be that religious objects of all kinds sometimes were exempt from local hallmarking regulations.

Best wishes, Bahner

Dear Bahner,
The bible cover edges have been crudely cut to fit the cover and believe if the cover was made for this particular cover they would have made to fit without cutting. Again so appreciative to all for sharing their knowledge and opinions about this.
Thank You Thank You!!!
Jenny
