Need help with hallmarks unable to decipher

Post by user701 »

I have found these hallmarks difficult to decipher and putting on here in the hope someone else's eyes are better than mine!

I can see a lion passant on the left, on the right side looks like a head, but I could be mistaken.

There is a makers mark, but I have been unable to read that either.

These are the best photos I could get in natural light, as the marks are very small.

Hi User,

What are these marks struck on? They appear to be London marks, but knowing if they are on jewellery or silverware etc. will help narrow down a likely maker.

It is a silver snail shaped snuff I am presuming. The marks are on the lid, which is why they are small and hard to capture, but also because of the the lid being in the style of a clam shell, they are also difficult to decipher!

I have just taken some quick photos of the object, not the best light at this time of the morning, but better than nothing. Shot of both sides and full shot of the lid.

It measures approximately 4cm side to side, approximately 3.5cm top to bottom, maximum depth of approximately 2.2cm and weighs 37g
