Help needed identifying and dating 'k' Hallmark please.

Post by Lithop »

Hi there. Having studied the London Date Letter Chart, I cant seem to find the exact corresponding font for the 'k' Hallmark depicted on my spoon. The closest I can find is that of 1865, however the serifs on mine close between the gap at the bottom of the 'k'. There is no Makers mark but there is a retriever engraved crest. Any help identifying and dating will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Chris

Hi welcome to the forum, I believe it to be date letter K for London 1865, normally there should be a maker’s mark unless it has been polished away or over struck. Please check. I will move you to the Family Crest section for help.

Thanks a lot for your welcome and speedy reply. I had a strong hunch it was an 1865 'K', but being new to these things an informed opinion always helps. Thanks again!

Ok I've closely scrutinized the spoon under a 10x loop and definitely see no evidence of an over-strike or polished out maker's mark. Perhaps an oversight on his behalf? ;)
