Wine coaster, Rothschild?

Post by zilverik »

Hi,

This wine coaster is of heavy quality. Maker mark: Robert Garrard II (Grimwade 2322). London K = 1865. It bears the middle part of the coat of arms of the Rothschild family on both sides (mostly cast). On other pieces with the Rothschild family crest I have seen, there are the leopard/lion & unicorn on the sides, helmet(s) above and the Rothschild family motto: "Concorda, Integras, Industria" beneath. How come only the middle part of the coat of arms is there? Anyone has an idea?

Regards,

Zilverik

I don't think it is unusual that the silversmith did not use the full achievement of the coat of arms. Whilst that would look good on a flat silver salver, or in full colour on stationery, or painted on a carriage door, this rococo piece makes the best use of the main shield in harmony with the design. What may be unusual is that the arm in the 2nd and 3rd quarters is holding only four arrows instead of five. Kind regards.

Thank you for your comment. I didn't notice there are only four arrows and indeed the coat of arms of the Rothschild family should have five arrows. So, I had a look at this sauceboat with the coat of arms of the Rothschild family. The sauceboat (with an inner boat) has the Paris mark Odiot (and also the Vienna mark Klinkosch, maybe the shop it was ordered?).
The amazing fact is that this sauceboat (1180 grams) appears to have only three arrows in the 2e and 3e quarters!

Kind regards,

Correction on a detail. Not 1180, but 1450 grams
