Silver Box
I thought that this would be an easy one since it is reasonably recent.
Looks Swedish from the 3 Crown/ S stamps and in any case I believe it was purchased in Sweden as a gift for EH. The O8 would therefore make it 1940, which again fits in with what I expect of the item's history
However, I have had a look at the town marks at
(admin edit - see Posting Requirements )
and while it looks a bit like the B for Bollnäs and perhaps a bit like the U in Uppsala they are not convincing.
I thought as it was from 1940 that it would have appeared in the registry at http://search.swedac.se/sv/namnstamplar but no luck with typing W&TB though perhaps that's not a B either......
Are there other better online resources than the ones I have listed above? I do read Swedish.

Found a somewhat longer list of town marks at
http://www.swedac.se/sv/Dokument/Inform ... rtsmarken/
Which made me realise that Uppsala is in a square while Umeå is in a circle. It also looks a bit like Norrtälje if ones uses imagination but there's nothing I can be sure about.

I think that this W&T.B mark stands for Wallin & Thorsén i Borås 1927-1960. Their usual mark is W&T but there seems to be a dot after T so the B in the maker's mark could stand for Borås. The letter in the circular mark is a capital serif B for Borås.
Re: Silver Box
There are no other internet links regarding Swedish makers. You need to buy books e.g. "Svenskt Silversmide 1512-1850" and "Svenskt Silversmide 1850-1912". The third in the row is "Stämplar på arbeten av guld silver och platina 1913-1987". All good books but the two last ones are rather difficult to find. On the other hand the last bok Stämplar... is more or less the same as SWEDAC.

I found example of Wallin & Thorsen's mark on the net. The W&T looks the same. Maybe an apprentice got confused about where to put the B.Qrt.S wrote:I think that this W&T.B mark stands for Wallin & Thorsén i Borås 1927-1960. I imagine those books will not be in my local library in Australia.
Re: Silver Box
No, I don't think you will find them there but you could to buy them via internet. Try "Svenskt Silversmide..."
Re: Silver Box
The mark is 'W & T' overstriking that of another ending in 'B'.
The ghosting of the original mark can clearly be seen between the letters of the overstrike.

Which is curious. Obviously they were not trying hard to hide the fact.dognose wrote:The mark is 'W & T' overstriking that of another ending in 'B'.

Re: Silver Box
I see a couple of the 1520 - 1850 available on line at the moment for approximately USD 600. Seems a lot for someone to pay to check the family silver especially since most of my stuff seems to be Danish. I'll keep checking the internet resources on this site and others for the time being and ask you guys occasionally.Qrt.S wrote:No, I don't think you will find them there but you could to buy them via internet. To digress a question for Qrt.S, Dognose , Hose_dk and the general site admin. Is there any benefit to me posting pictures of the maker's marks that I have identified? Dognose once asked me to post one that I mentioned in a post and I have quite a few Danish spoons. Is it worth it for general info or to add into the danish marks database?
Re: Silver Box
Hi Angus,
Yes, indeed it is very worthwhile to post the marks, and would be appreciated. Even the commonest of marks sometimes show slight variations that are of interest and good images of marks, even if we already have them, may well be better than the ones we hold.

Re: Silver Box
Ok I have catalogued about 60 items of different types so far so there might be a few.

Hi Angus,
I think it probably best if you could start a topic in the 'Contributors' Notes' section of the forum, then you can add them at your leisure.
