Hello, I have just been doing a bit of research on a Portugal “guild” 833 mark using the world silver marks section. I just need a bit of guidance as it shows my 833 mark being used from 1938 but that the “present Portugal assay marks” do not use 833 parts silver. When in fact did “present” start and when did 833 stop being used. Checking a few posts I think it may be 1984? I assume, this question has been asked by others before, but even the world silver standards section does not give dates.

Hi Fishless,
Portugal 1887 to date.
From 1640 to 1910, the Kingdom of Portugal was ruled by the monarchs of the Braganza dynasty. The hallmarks of Portugal used throughout the 17th, 18th, and most of the 19th centuries were stylistically similar to those used in France and Germany, during the same time period. In 1887, Portugal overhauled this old (guild) hallmarking system and established a very extensive but orderly series of new hallmarks. After the revolutionary overthrow of the monarchy in 1910 only major hallmark revisions in the years 1937 and 1938, when some of the assaying and hallmarking procedures were simplified. In 1984 the hallmarks went through a major revision.

Thank you Oel for so quick a reply and this extra huge database. I hope it will be easily found for other silver “searchers”. There is a huge amount of information all over the forum and the web site but is often hard to know where to look for that little bit you really want.
Thanks again
