After 6 months spent trying identify this piece, I'm turning to The Experts for help:
This nut(?) box appears to be in the Hanau Antique Style, however, its lion and anchor marks first sent me looking at British and US makers. Gorham & Co. ("GC") was an obvious starting point, but no luck there or with any other American makers. The lack of a sovereign mark quickly disqualified its being British, as I do know it was purchased some time between 1870 and 1925. After looking through thousands of marks — including Hanau pseudo marks, I remain utterly stumped. Any help/education would be much appreciated. I'm very new to this, but I'm finding both the detective work and the history I'm learning truly fascinating.
FYI: The box measures 8cm-W x 5.5cm-D x 9cm-H (including finial and feet).
My sincere thanks for your time!
