date letter background mismatch

I bought an 18ct 3 stone diamond ring today and was told the date was 1888.
the date letter is N and has a London assay mark. However my hallmark book shows the letter within a shield shape, but my ring is a letter N within a square with chamfered corners. For the record all the other marks are also in chamfered squares, so was this deviation allowed for aesthetic reasons or is there something wrong?

just one more observation, the letter N design is identical to the 1888 design and not the 1948 letter N design
