Sterling Silver Plate

Post by Traintime »

Many modern origin items are turing up marked "Sterling Silver Plated". Is this a deception as Electroplating uses .999 fine and I would expect nobody could afford the old process of hammering sheets of metal together?

Hi Trainline,

No, I don't think it's deception, as such plating is better than the Sterling standard. I think that it is just a marketing term as the public most recognise the word 'Sterling' as a degree of quality and the use of word generally accepted as minimum of 925/1000.
