Does anybody know the maker?

Hi,

I have this 1740 Hanoverian table spoon and can't seem to track down the maker. I have looked in Grimwade's but it is either not listed or I have missed it, apologies if its obvious and I have overlooked it.

I can only suggest that this mark was originally in the 1739-1758 smallworkers' register which has since been lost. I note that Grimwade illustrates a slightly similar SW mark (but without the starburst) in his "Unregistered Marks" section (#3806) seen on 1747 tablespoons and attributed to "unidentified". Grimwade's illustration would have been copied from the real example whose mark may not have been as clear as your picture; of course it might be a completely different mark....

Interesting observation on Starling Wilford Trev, certainly could explain the starburst element. Initially I thought the second letter was an A not a W so didn't really consider Wilford.
