Huge German (40cm long) spoon? Mark 'R' Twice

Post by mk209 »

I recently bought this as I hadn't got a basting spoon in my collection, it's huge at 40cm long and the bowl alone is 13.5 x 8 cm! It appears made from 800 or so silver and weighs 176g. It's marked twice with a fancy 'R' but has no other markings. Possibly German? Hopefully somebody will be able to help.

Hello Matt,

it is the mark of Hans Frederik Rau (about 1788 - 1877) from Vejle in Danmark (Bøje No. 6415).

Best regards, Ringo

Thankyou so much Ringo I'm very grateful for your information. It's great to know where it comes from and I'm a bit surprised at Denmark as it's so different to all my other Danish items. I'm sure it'll remain the biggest spoon I've seen for a long time!
