Dear Forum. If I muck it up my apologies in advance. I want to post some pictures but I believe I need permission if I read the FAQ right.
I own a Chatelaine silver mesh purse 275 gram / 9 oz.
It is a wonderful piece and I love it. However, I am unsure of its origin and none of my hours and hours have produced much. I thought it may be German but someone told me it was probably Belgium or Flemish. My nearest result though comes up with the distinct possibility of French.
The reason for this is the "Obus", cannon shell shape. That's where I know nothing more. Within the shape at the top there is a figure of an animal. Type, Rhino, Elephant, Whooly Mammoth, Dinosaur. Below the figure is a name or word. It begins with B and ends with T. It could be Burnet. Barrat Boutin, Bonnet, or something. Under the name is marks 925 and after a small gap is marked M. That's it. All squeezed into something not much bigger than 1 / 16th of an inch. Small!!. On the inside of the purse is marked 925 which I believe to have been added later. It just looks different. French export? Probably but with loose ends that are driving me a little crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Love the forum. Thanks. D

Re: Identify French mark
Thank you Trev
I am an antiques man and I cannot cope with putting pictures onto web servers etc. I thank you for your help.
I got an answer funnily enough from an American "ask me" site over Christmas. It wasn't my question but was from a lady who had almost the same mark. Pure luck for me. French export Obus mark showing 925 purity and mark of a horse or mule and marked B T. Does it for me....
