19th Century Wine Cooler

Post by Whitla »

Can anyone help identify the single letter mark 'W' at the base of an old S/P wine cooler. There are no other marks. It has come down through the family and looks to be early 19th Century. (Much of the accompanying silver is 18th and 19th Century) Is it possible to hazard a guess as to who made it?

Many thanks to kind members who guided me re. uploading the photo.

Hi Whitla,

Good job with the images.

Much OSP was made without any maker's marks, but often just a workman's mark, and I suspect this is the case we have here. Probably the only chance of identifying the maker would be if you found the likeness in a surviving period catalogue.

Date-wise the item does have similarities with other examples of c.1820 that I have seen.

Hi Trev,

Thanks for this and for the hints in an earlier message re. uploading the picture.

I think your date is about right and I'll just patiently wait to see if any further clues emerge regarding the maker.

All good wishes,

Hi Trev,

Just realized I haven't thanked you for the French wine cooler example.

Both your knowledge and kindness is appreciated.

Still no idea who 'W' might be:-)
