Mark "A" like an angel - what could it be?

Post by MSBR »

Hi there! Could you help with identify of "A like an angel" mark please ? There is the silver box, I believe it is from Birmingham, 1900. The strange "A" mark is on the bottom and on the cover. Is it the maker's mark? Then, who could be this maker? Or the maker's mark is leftmost on the bottom? What is "A" then? Or the leftmost on the bottom is kind of import mark or something else?
Thank you!

Letter I on the left is rarely seen. It is not mentioned in town and import marks after 1867.
A = Wien B = Linz C = Praha D = Brno E = Krakow F = Lwow G = Graz H = Hall (until 1872) H = Bregenz (since 1872) K = Klagenfurt L = Ljubliana
M = Trieste N = Zadar (only in the years 1866-67)P = Pest
But I was used for Klagenfurt before 1867.

Thank you! I didn't come to mind Austro-Hungarian Empire marks in this case. It was really useful!

I found “I” for Innsbruck 1939 – 1945 also. But It was later than AV-wings were used. As well as “I“ for Klagenfurt before 1867 – is too early for small import mark.

So: 1. It may be not “I” but the part of “letter +1” (A1 or something like this) – hopefully, but I’m not sure, because of that mark is in too good condition to miss the symbol. 2. There could be much longer period when this small mark was used – doubtfully because of similar information from several lists of marks. 3. It can be a fake one (

What do you think?

Yes, the mark is well struck and it`s not faked. Besides, it makes no sense to fake it.
Completely forgot this, read my post

Your box was imported to Bolzano, now in Italy (South Tyrol). Its name in German is Bozen and it belonged to Austria – Hungary Empire at the time. Letter I is definitively for Bolzano because the items I took pictures of have engraved inscription ``Bozen``.
Do not be surprised silver from Birmingham was imported to Austria. Bolzano is an important tourist destination. Besides, Italy is full of imported British silver.
Mystery solved.
