London Dragon - Scottish Maker ? Help Please!

Post by englishladyfromkent »

Why don't I ever get a piece of silver which is easy to ID ? Here is another which confounds me, even though the marks are nice and clear.

The piece is a silver brooch taking the form of a dragon. The marks as you see in the images are:

1.CKMcG - maker ? Scottish maker living in London ?
2 Lion Rampant - Sterling Silver I think
3 Leopards Head - London assay office
4 Letter W - date letter, but which date? ' London Date Letters on Silver' a useful table on here cut off before W. Could it me M upside down, even though the rest are aligned beautifully? It is definitely a W and looks like the old copper plate W from the list from Edinburgh list, would anyone agree or have other ideas please ? Stumped on this.

I'm really stuck with this one. Would very much appreciate any advice or help anyone can give and thank you in advance for your time.

Thank you all.

A London hallmark as you surmised. W is the date letter for 1996. It certainly sounds as if CKMcG is an expatriate Scot, but unknown to me. I checked the Edinburgh lists to see if he/she had also registered a mark there but I didn't find an entry for these initials.

The lion is actually passant, not rampant which would be standing on its 2 back feet with both front legs up. A lion passant is the English mark for sterling; the lion rampant is the equivalent for Scotland.

It`s made in 1996.I think I saw this pendant beside weird prosthetic glass eyeballs mounted in silver in the shop window of Great Frog London, Carnaby Street's jeweler. Those eyeballs were spooky, the reason I remember what was displayed on the tray.

I am most grateful for your two replies. Thank you.

Yes, it does sound like a Scottish name, and thank you very much for checking that aspect out. I have carried on researching but turned up nothing whatsoever on these initials.
I am pretty hopeless at marks, but thought I had got the lion right. So the one I think is English is Scottish, and vice versa? I will try to remember. How clever of you to discover the date mark to 1996. Thank you.

Have to say I was hoping for 1796 ! Now that would be interesting.

I contacted the Frog shop mentioned by the second poster in Carnaby Street, and they do not keep records of items provenance or makers details. One of the people I spoke with said it did have the look of something they would sell, but they could not be positive.

So thank you again for your time and help, truly very much appreciated.

Thank you so much to the organizers of this site. It is a real Godsend to people like me who are hopeless with marks on silver.
