Candelstick unidentified Austia-Hungary

Post by hf-berlin »

Hello,

please can anyone help me to find out more about this nice solid silver (800) candlestick. It might be from Pest (Hungary) as the Diana-hallmark shows. But who made it? And when? I can tidentify the second hallmark (flower?, blossom?). I dont own the books from Knies or V. Reitzner, to find out and make a copy of the page that tells about the silversmith. So I cant find out. Please, I need help. Helen from Berlin

Hi,
Welcome to the forum
The flower-like mark (7 dots) is Sandrik in Dolne Hamre, Slovakia
Look here, please

Fantatic, super thanks so much my dear! It must be a Sandrik founded 1895. This explans the reason I did not find the hellmark in Pest. The Austrian hellmark was valid from 1872 till 1922. It says 880 siver from Pest (now Budapest since 1873).But I cant find simply the flower within this time. Even not under Prof. David N. Nikogosyan postings. Is it possible to find out, when the candelstick was made? Helen

Sandrik in 1905.
I think the candelabra was made before 1900.
Diana`s head was used 1867-1922. The mark on your candlestick is for .800 purity.

The letter on the right, i.e. in front of Diana`s head is ``P``. It stands for Budapest, accompanied by a number which I cannot see properly. It means the candlestick was not assayed in Budapest but in an office which belonged to Budapest main office. The closest assay office to Hodruša – Hámre was Pressburg (Bratislava).

Thanks again. I found out the smae with your help. Perhaps one will have to look in "Knies" or "V. Reitzner" to find out more about the year of this exact kind of hellmark from Sandrik. These books are rare and expensive. And not in a library in Berlin I found out. If anbody has more information I would be glad.

So, what might help more precise dating (I am sure it was made around 1900)?
1. Ján Sandrik was focused on production of small series of silver. The increasing financial problems forced the firm to shift to the cheaper nickel silver and production of flatware and drinking glass. This significant change occurred under the management of Jan Peterka in 1903.
2. Possible recorded assignment of a particular letter to Pressburg, as seen in Bregenz (see my post)
http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... no#p123021
Alfred Rohrwasser (Österreichs Punzen edelmetall-punzierung in Östereich von 1524 bis 1984,Verlag Bondi ) has more comprehensive list of assay offices (unfortunately, the book is not with me anymore).
E.g. ``C`` for Prague, C1 Reichsberg ,C2 Teplitz ,C3 Karlsbad ,C4 Pilsen
3. Even if there is Sandrik catalogue of the production line (which I doubt for small series of silver) that would mean the first year of production with the same pattern being produced for many years (compare with British registration numbers).
4. I have seen many Austrian candlesticks of this form and décor, similar feet, similar engraving etc. and they were made late 19th century, and not even close to WW I (based on makers and the provenance).
I hope this helps
Enjoy the spring in your Kiez
