Italian hallmark identification

Post by Eleni »

Hello to all... I have this set of candle holders that I wish to know more details regarding the items from the stamped hallmarks. In particular I cannot find in the encyclopaedia or elsewhere the mark that looks like a bird? Thank you all for your time...

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

It is always better to embed your images as very few people will click on links or thumbnails.

Hi,
If it`s 4VC for Vercelli, the mark entered in 1935 and out between 1955 and 1971.
No further information is available as far as I know.

Thank you AG2012 for the help. I guess it is 4VC, looks like it. The other mark though that looks like a bird to me? It is a mark I cannot find anywhere... How can someone figure out the style of it eg. rococo etc?

In addition now that you helped me with the VC mark, looking around the web, I saw other marks with the VC mark but different numbers, e.g.. 37VC. Could this mean the year?

CV stands for the name of the province and city in Italy called Vercelli
4VC stands for the name of a Makers Mark in Vercelli.

For more precise dating, there is no ``fasces`` symbol between 4 and VC, meaning the mark is after 1944. Silversmith’s number is within a lozenge with cut corners used until 1966.

In short, based on marks, it was made between 1944 and 1966.
