silent butler marks

Post by tbar68 »

Silent Butler, wood handle marked on bottom EPC in boxes with 3 symbols: man w/ beard, crown and scrolled s. Coat of arms on top w/ two unicorns and shield with a hand holding dagger above. Any info? Will try to post picture later.

Thanks

The letters EPC stand for ElectroPlated on Copper.
The next set of marks you describe sounds like those used by the American firm Sheffield Silver Company, Brooklyn, New York. They used these marks from 1908 to1950.
Have no idea what the other marks are.

Yep that looks like the mark, except the man with the beard is a little different. It does not say Sheffield anywhere, but it does have a number "269" below markings.

In 1935, Louis Farber bought the Sheffield Silver Company. I think the mark changed some at this time. The mans head looks to have less of a beard on this one.
I actually showed two marks in my scan. The first mark is just the head, crown and S by themselves. In 1950 they started stamping the name Sheffield Silver Company.

Yep the man definitely has a smaller beard. Do you know what the number 269 means?
Thanks for all your help!

The number 269 is probably just a pattern or catalogue number.
