Spoon with no City Mark

Post by GalwayVolunteer »

Hi Everybody,

Im new to the forum, but use the site most days.

I have recently come across this spoon and it has no city stamp.

I found a similar spoon on here that was identified as exeter.

Id like to know where mine was made and also how its been identified.

Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge.

Dave.

Those images might be too small.

Here they are again.

Looks to me to be the makers mark of George Turner

Thanks for your reply.

Can i ask how is the spoon identified as exeter?
Why did they not have a city mark?
Are all similar hallmarks exeter also?

Regards,

Dave.

It's a combination of the maker's mark, the shape of the lion passant punch and some experience.

Agree with Phil, particularly about experience of Exeter marks when no town mark is present.

Hi Dave,

Just to add that the city mark was omitted at this period on small items to prevent the mark being transposed onto larger objects.
