Hi,

That is only the engraved inscription, it does not refer to the maker. Are there no other marks on the spoon?

You are far more likely to get a response if you embed your images as very few people will click on such links.

Hello joss,

the only goldsmith from Pernau I know from this time with a family name beginning with "B" is Magnus Wilhelm Brackmann, *1787-1862 (his mark "MB" in ligature).

Kind regards,
Ringo

Hans Diedrich Schmidt was not a goldsmith but a merchant who mostly dealt with Fabrics and wine etc. He had a big department store in Pernau. The engraving might be his but that is all. I don't either think it is Brackman because then the assay marks should be Russian ones and they aren't. Unfortunately the maker's mark is partly destroyed/invisible. Only the last letter a B is visible. I would bet on Fredrich Ernst Behrens punching FEB or FE/B in 1780-1803 in Pernau. Another alternative is Andreas Berg 1712-1723 because the end of the frame looks rather rounded, but...hardly...?
An engraving does not tell the date/year of manufacturing. It can be done at any time by anybody. The official marks are crucial, not the engravings.

Hello Qrt.S,

my mistake. You are right, Friedrich Ernst Behrens is also a possible candidat. But Andreas Berg is to old. The spoon is a 19th century spoon.

No problem R ingo, yes Berg is hardly the case as I already anticipated. I think it is Behrens. It would be nice to see a picture of the whole spoon and not only a part of the stem. I might help to date it.

Do you mean that all spoons have only this single B as a maker's mark? It is very uncommon that a maker uses one letter only. Usually he punched his initials i.e. two letters. If the mark is really a pure B only I must admit that I'm confused and totally "out". Please show sharp and big close ups of all marks. Somehow I have a feeling that there must be two letters but the shape of the stem has caused a bad punch with a missing first letter.....I think...? Thank you in advance.

I agree with you that the marks do looked rub just unusual for the mark to be rubbed on all three spoons but as you said it could be just because of the shape of the stem that they have been punched badly. I will upload images of all three marks.
