I am attempting to identify a sterling mark that is on the base of a wooden bowl. I am not a professional photographer and do not know how to get a clear picture of the mark itself. I have tried taking many pictures at different settings, etc. but have not found a method that works.
There is a number 1 4 0 0 Sterling and a lion on it's hind legs (upon looking at the British marks, the only one similar is Glasgow, Scotland but I am not sure). The lion's front leg is touching a small box with the letter E inside. I could not find this mark in the pages I searched thus the reason I am posting here.
I appreciate any and all good assistance with identifying this particular mark.

Sounds like an American mark used by the Ellmore Silver Company, Meriden, Connecticut.
