Clarification & Verification

Post by schellett »

Greetings, my first post here as I am truly stumped. I have used this website before to assist in identifying marks and would like to say a BIG THANK YOU for the knowledge base here, you have been a great help!

I need a little help further identifying this object.

I believe from my research that it is maybe Italian silver not German due to the lack of crescent near the crown. The makers mark looks like AL to me but this doesn't seem to help identify the maker. The crest on the front is also eluding me, can't seem to trace it anywhere. Wondered if anyone had encountered something similar and if my initial deductions are correct. Finally is the glass dish contemporary with the silver item?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
More probably Italian (cannot identify German Reichsmark).
The shape looks like Italian mark 1944 – 1968.

``AL`` should stand for Alessandria or Valenza (both towns in the same province), but without numbers difficult to identify. Is there a number after AL?
Cheers

Just recalled having seen the simplified coat of arms on the tombstone of Scarlatti family (musicians) in the church of Montesanto in Naples.
Or a Florentine family of the same name, the musician Family claiming to have been connected to.
At least a hint where to start searching. Engraving coat of arms could be entirely decorative on relatively new or vintage items.
Best wishes

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

You can also search for the trade mark here: Italian Silverware and Jewellery Manufacturers

Hi people, thank you for your knowledge!

Unfortunately the number looks like it has been rubbed off and there are no other markings elsewhere.

I will get onto the Scarlatti trail, that's amazing! thank you (I knew this was the place to come!!)

Kind Regards
Scott

That type of glass container was popular in the 70's for serving caviar. In the gap between the glass and silver was put crushed ice
