WHS William or Walter?

Post by Badger3000 »

Hello, Please help clear up my confusion.
I have a guided spoon with the Makers Mark WHS in a shield when researching this the name that comes up is WILLIAM Henry Seale of Seale & Co Lom bard Street London. according to this record the Makers mark was registered in Mar 1899 -1905. On Trev's site the mark for Seale & Co is an S & Co Ltd and was established by WALTER Henry Searle in 1893.
Any light shed on this to clarify the history of who and when the WHS mark is will be most appreciated.
Many Thanks Badger

According to Fallon's book on London marks Walter Searle entered WHS marks of various sizes between 1899 and 1906. He had entered into a partnership with the brothers Frank and Arthur Eady in 1897 but the partnership was dissolved in 1907 because he had used several thousand pounds of the firm's money to speculate on the stock exchange. The firm was continued by the Eadys, still under the name Searle and Co. Hence the S & Co mark entered in 1908.

I have no idea where I got William from as Culme also quite clearly has "Walter". I have updated my site accordingly.
