European silver snuff box

Post by JanGroen »

Good evening
I have bought this silver box online. It was advertised as a silver plated box but I believe it could be solid silver. It is 82mm x 46mm x 20mm and has an unknown coat on arms on the lid. The makers mark could be an upside down AW and then it is followed by a 13?
Any information about age, maker and country of origin would be welcome.

I think that the case is silver plated. Number 13 indicates 13 gr fine silver were used to coat the piece.Producer could be August Wellner before 1892.
Best wishes.

HEllo!
I believe, that is silver. The 13 indicates the fineness, 812, as 13 lot. The age is the 2. half of the 19. century. It's from middle Europe, Germany, Austria/Hungary, or Poland.
I can't identify the maker.
Best regards!

Hi,
Must disagree with ‚‚silver plated‚‚
It`s 13 Loth standard .813 used in Germany, Austria- Hungary. It was abandoned mid 19th century (1866 in Austria -Hungary and 1886 in Germany).
The crown is count`s crown (nine pearls) used in German speaking countries.
Fineness 13 Loth is often seen with maker`s mark, but without town mark, making positive identification of the origin difficult, unless ``AW`` of the same form is found elsewhere.

Hi,
Dendriet has found the same maker (compare ``AW``, number ``13`` and the box itself). There is additional letter ``P``. Marks of this kind (no background) were struck on Austrian silver, but the sequence of letters is inconsistent, except for e.g. Hall in Tirol and Innsbruck. I suppose Krisztián would have recognized whether ``P`` stands for Pest, but what about Pressburg, for example. Those letters are not well documented.

Good evening
So I finally got my new box in hand. It weighs 80 grams and very sturdy.
I have found a similar looking box with a similar 13 online.

(admin edit - see Posting Requirements )

There seems to be a town mark next to the 13. Could it be the same maker as well?
