Hi, Please help me identify this piece. It looks like a pendant to me, but really not sure what it means to use for , just a tiny pendant box or something else. Hallmarks on the edge ; W Lion Passant, Leopard head, u (tha last hallmark hardly to see) Under the lid WS , Lion passant and u.

Thanks and appreciate for your help. saa

Hi,
All of your marks can be identified from here -> British Hallmarks
as your starting point. Have a look.

The year is 1875. The maker mark is similar to William Sumner, London, but he died in 1807. Whether or not his family continued using the name, i don't know. It may be one of those unidentified marks that remain a mystery.

Yes, I think a 68 year period of death might rule William Sumner out of this one. More likely William Summers who died in 1890.

As to its use, I have a couple of thoughts. First, it could be a vinaigrette that was on a chain, but is missing its grille. However, it is pretty masculine in style, so it might also be a snuff box.

Or possibly a vesta case? if the top has a groved surface,

I'm not too familiar with the size of quarters, but isn't it too small for a snuff box; it looks like it might be difficult to get the thumb and fore-finger in.
