Filigree basket - Question about hallmarks.

Hi. Silver Filigree basket. At least I think it is silver. Do you think the hallmarks look correct? Any information you want to share is appreciated. The one hallmark does not show well, it looks like a 9. something. The other hallmarks look like an 88 maybe then an A K with a cross with hands holding it.

One more pic. I did try researching but I am no expert. I read about three punches being applied at same time. To me the middle mark looks like it may have been double punched but the other two do not. Also I read about A K mark by two assayers from middle 1800's to late 1800's. This piece does not look that old to me but I do not know this material at all so just going by what I read.

Your images cropped and embedded.
Town mark (on the right) is Tbilisi (Tiflis), Georgia.Cross and crescent and assayer unknown to me.
On the left is maker`s mark, most likely in Georgian alphabet.They are known to have worked with filigree.
``88``zolotniki standard is .916 silver fineness; not uncommon in filigree.
Looks authentic but I`m always suspicions with so many fakes on the market, especially with over-struck marks (``88``)

Have just seen the front side of the basket.

Crown of Nobility is consistent with Imperial Russian heraldic crowns. The lowest rank of nobility.

Assaymaster A·K is probably Karpinski 1823-1829 - so you have a approximate date of origin. Looks original and is in very good condition.

Such coat of arms was use since 1878.

If the Tbilissi/Tiflis town mark was used as from 1878 as Dad says, the assayer cannot be Karpinsky. However, there is another AK in the area. He is A.Kjun 1877-1878 but he assayed in Kazan. Kjun is not known to have assayed in Tiflis, but....?
What if you clean the maker's mark to the left and see what it will reveal.

Hi,
Prior to 1886 Tiflis mark was St George, patron saint of Georgia.But due to striking similarity to Moscow mark it was changed to Tiflis coat of arms (cross and crescent seen in this post).
Correct me if I am wrong.

Look at date of acceptance of the coat of arms. Before 1878 it wasn't.

I'm puzzled...If the town mark of Tiflis, Riding St George was changed to the hands and cross town mark in 1878, then who is the assayer AK? He cannot be A.Karpinski because he assayed 1823-1829!

Hi -

It is striking that in Tbilisi was not stamped according to the rules. One of the different stamps is missing most of the time. Many of the manufacturers are neither listed nor known. Literature is thin. Not easy for the collectors....
