Hi
I bought this jug today. It has the word SILVER in capitals on the base, a lion rampant in a shield facing right and a coat of arms with unreadable lettering.
The worn bass rim shows copper?
Is this Old Sheffield Plate please and what date would be probable? Any more information on the marks would be of interest please

Re: Plated but marked SILVER with Lion Rampant?
Hard phtos, but bottom mark looks like it might hold some components plus of compound mark of Gregg Silver Company (1950- USA). That should have a lion on left half and "g" to right. Your upper shield looks like a descending crane-in-flight to me. If it is, then maybe a Japanes retailer mark. The word mark "SILVER" is used in Japan, but without a qualifier mark I would automatically assume silverplate. The banner under Gregg mark would normally read "ARGENTVM" for argentum. The made plated holloware. But, again, at this point I'm only guessing until better mark photos can be had.
