Hi,
Sailing boat mark on the right of 84 should stand for Kostroma, but maker`s mark is Pavel Ovchinikov
(П.Овчинников) which is extremely controversial.
Although the cigarette case looks authentic (images are not very good, though), I think lucrative maker`s mark is faked to increase the value.Besides, the cloisonne quality does not match excellent enamelled work by one of the best Russian silversmiths.
Let`s wait for more responses.
Regards
Agree with AG2012. In addition, where is the court supplier mark? The hallmark on the case was used 1882-1899. At that time Ovtchinnikov was already court supplier.
thank you for your amazing reply! I want to thank you Admin as well to help me to make proper post!
Can you please see more photos of the item, I also ve been trying to put close up photos of enamel. There is few places where enamel have different "red" colors and its look suspicious for me. I hope I still have few days to return the item. In case its purely non Russian antique enamel fake, I would be really sad.
Based on poor quality of photograps the only thing I see for sure that the item is not made by P.Ovchinnikov, and most likly not authentic - period.
Regards,
Hi,
Enamel is actually powdered glass molten within the cloisonne cells.
If damaged, re-firing to repair it is impossible, but instead various colours can be used to fill missing enamel. It can be easily tested with the tip of a needle; it will not scratch enamel but soft colour of any kind will be scratched. No harm done to the piece.
I mean, the cigarette case could be genuine after all, but in rather poor condition, repaired and faked marks added to make it more appealing.
