I.Mc Sugar Tongs

Post by SimonJersey »

Hi all,
Knowing these are likely to be Scottish, who would be the maker and approximate age?
The are have one mark only on the inside of one of the arms.
many thanks
Simon

At a glance I would guess French, but others will know better. A good clear close up of any marks will definitely be helpful.

Ok, I see the mark now. It just didn't open when I first looked at the post.

The form reminds me of James Erskine of Aberdeen :: I checked Aberdeen silversmiths and there is a "James McDonald" but I can't find an example of his hallmark for comparison :::

This has been ascribed to James McEwan of Glasgow (Possibly) by Edinburgh Incorporation of Goldsmiths.

Thanks Matt, does the source give any working dates? (I'm also trying to date the tongs as well)
Best,

If the tongs are by James McEwan his working dates are given c1762-c1790 here: https://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Mak ... -GJ.html#J
Sugar tongs of that type were made from the 1770s onwards so the style is appropriate for the active years of James McEwan. You can find more information about sugar tongs here: http://www.silversugartongs.com/Collectors/style.htm As you can notice by the style section your tongs fit very well to the Scottish description.
