South African and Rhodesian Silversmiths
Re: South African and Rhodesian Silversmiths
MORRIS GRUSHKO
Bloemfontein
Mr. Carter, manager of Heynes, Mathew & Co.'s West-end Pharmacy, Bloemfontein, was an important witness at the Magistrate's Court last week,
when Morris Grushko, a local jeweller, was charged with illicit diamond-buying. The case was remitted to the High Court and the accused liberated on reduced bail. Mr. Carter's evidence was to the effect that the accused consulted him with regard to obtaining acids for testing stones, and spoke quite openly of having had some stones brought to him for testing, which were alleged to have come from a newly discovered mine; and the defence was that the stones were never purchased by the accused, but merely received for testing-purposes. The case was one of "trapping."

BLUMENTHAL & Co.
Dutoitspan Road, Kimberley
The business of Max Blumenthal, a Latvian, born at Jacobstad, Kurland in 1877. He arrived in South Africa, via Dublin, in the late 1890's.
The shop and workshop of Blumenthal & Co. were noted as displaying a large cast iron sign outside the premises stating: 'By Royal Appointment to Prince George of Wales', this followed the royal visit to Kimberley in March 1934.
A secondary business was later opened, styled 'Central Jewellers'.
Max Blumenthal died in 1944 and the business passed to his son-in-law and daughter, Abe and Violet Toube.

Re: South African and Rhodesian Silversmiths
THE JEWELRY TRADE IN THE TRANSVAAL
In the Transvaal the sale of imitation jewelry is effected through the medium of hawkers and stalls at the chief commercial centers on market days. The jewelers proper also make a practice of selling imitation goods, but these are of a better class and finish than those sold by the peddlers.
To any one intending to start in business in this part of the world it is suggested that a store should be secured at a rental of from $135 to $200 per month. A dealer should not restrict himself to sham jewelry, for which, after all, there is only a limited sale, but he should lay in a stock of better goods. A good salesman can be secured for from $75 to $100 per month; incidental expenses would amount to about $50; these would give a total monthly expense of about $300.
A syndicate of French jewelers have started an establishment recently at Johannesburg.
The customs duties on sham jewelry are 7½ per cent, of the invoice value, plus 20 per cent.
