Found a gold signet ring seal while metal detecting, buried 4-6" in the ground at relatively same depth as Civil War relics - I am looking to identify the two small hallmarks/makers marks on the inside of the ring.
Through research, we've found that the crest on the front of the ring is the Gylpyn family crest and it carries the motto of "Dictis factisque simplex" - the Gylpyns were from England, and moved to America.
Inside the ring, is a stamped rectangle with a 14 and a design that I can't make out. A rowboat, a feather, or a sword - something along those lines. It weighs 18.2 grams.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Not British mark, therefore most likely American.
14K could have been stamped as early as 1906 in the USA.Not earlier than that.

The trade mark was filed on the 8th May 1906.

Thank you for your help! Since it does not have a "K" and just has the "14" and the Larter & Sons mark - that would date it to pre-1906 then?AG2012 wrote:Hi,

Thank you for your help in this! Greatly appreciated as we have been searching for the maker's mark - I'm noticing the progression of the trademark from the more primitive version to the one you posted with the "K" - do you have any idea or resources on the progression of their maker's mark since the company opened in 1865? We are now trying to track down the specific year in which it was created in order to track down which Gilpin family member owned it.
