GWC on Coin Silver Butter Knife

Post by mhmorningstar »

I have a butter knife that I'm certain is coin silver but not sure of the marks on it. It's marked "G.W.C." and has what looks to be a journeyman's mark to the left. Is anyone familiar with GWC? I'm not sure if it is a maker or retailer but am having trouble finding any info.

This is from a list of Maine Jewelers - don't know if it is any match:

Hartford, G. W. C.: JLY & W, Sanford, 1882

That's a very interesting list. GWC Hartford was a retailer of jewelry & watches but I can't find any retailer marks for them. I would think that they would use their last name on their mark and they are not listed as dealing in silver wares, but the initials make it a possibility. The only silversmiths I can find are George Washington Chatterton and George W. Cook(e), but they both used their last names on their marks as far as I can tell.
