Christofle halmarks crossed out

I recently acquired a tilting teapot with christofle hallmarks. Hallmarks are on the burner, stand and pot. but on each the manufacturers' mark has been crossed out, sometimes gouged out. Wondering why? Could have been rejected by the factory. Maybe an old girlfriend got PO'ed and took his name off everything, who knows. Pot itself is in lovely condition.
