Can anyone determine the maker?

Post by juantotree »

Hi

This table spoon has some partly worn hallmarks, the date letter is possibly 1769, but is there enough left of the makers mark for anyone to make an attribution?

Many Thanks
Martin

The date is either 1759 or 1769 - the difference between the 2 would be obvious if the worn part were clear. The maker's mark doesn't have any distinctive features so there is quite a wide choice; it could be BC for Benjamin Cartwright or Benjamin Cooper, PG for Philip Goddard, RC for Robin Albin Cox or Robert Clark or, given the date, it could be someone from one of the lost registers.

Thanks Phil, I thought it might be a bit of a long shot to pin it down.

Hi Martin I would very much say this is typical of Benjamin’s work but just to help further here’s some pictures:

The other spoon maker who’s work is similar is Robert Sallam.

Thank you for your suggestions, I think you may be onto something with the Benjamin Cartwright suggestion.
