Help with Russian Silver Snuff Box

Post by dartsil »

I wonder,

Can anyone assist with pretty much all of this box.

1/. What does in English the wording on lid say?

2/.Does anyone recognise maker, I am assuming it will be late 19th century.

3/. The scenes to the lid and base, are they of anything that anyone recognises?

Hi,
Peter Catherine in Russian (Cyrillic alfabeth). The image depicts the monument of Peter the Great in St Petersburg, errected 1782.
The image also depicts his fleet because he spent much time in The Netherlands studying shipbuilding and then created Russian fleet.Even tricolor Russian flag is modified Dutch flag.
StGeorge mark for Moscow assay office of this form was used in the first three decades of 19th century.
Cannod decipher the maker and the assayer.

Thanks a lot AD2012,

Very much appreciated. Marks a bit worn on makers/assayers mark so will work on that should no one recognise.

If you inspect the edges of the lid very closely, you might see further hallmarks other than the [84] which you have pictured. ::: I have a Russian cigarette case by KC and I found hallmarks on all of it's parts, even the tiniest of edges you would not think had hallmarks, but yet there they were. ::

Hi!

A very nice object, congrats.

I believe the maker to be Ivan Kaltykov (PL #2494) known especially for the snuffbox with niello and the assayer is Nikolai Gertov.

A minor problem dear Juke, Kaltykov worked in Moscow but Gertov assayed in St. Petersburg, so...???

Good point, the alternative is Nikolai Dubrovin (н.д, 1822-55), however the second letter seems not to be the best match. Can't find a better assayer match with the form of the second letter.
