GEISLINGEN 90 DRP 76975

Post by DianaGaleM »

I'm sorry I don't have an image, but I hope one isn't needed here.

There's a fork online being called WMF that is stamped:

GEISLINGEN 90 DRP 76975

and I see in the "Silverplate Marks" section of this site that "GEISLINGEN 90" is a WMF mark. Would this mark indicate the piece was produced by Straub's company before it became WMF in 1880? The pattern is an old, traditional one: your classic "spaten" [flat, unadorned fiddle w/pronounced wings and long rounded tines], so it could be pre-1880.

My understanding is that WMF wasn't the only silverplate manufacturer in Geislingen, so is this necessarily a WMF mark?

Hi Diana,

Images are required for questions about marks, however, I note online that one individual has a piece that may have the mark you describe and they state that it is also struck with the antler mark, which I believe was used by WMF as from 1880. But as to whether this is the exact mark cannot be known without images.

This seller did not make a claim for the antler mark. I asked the seller for permission to use their images, and they said OK.

The green tinge is an artifact from my manipulating the image. Of course, the fork has been modified by someone, to its great detriment. It appears to be WMF's Modell J, said to be in production from 1891 thru 1913/14, but could it be earlier?

Hi,
DRP number (Deutsches Reichspatent)
1893 started with 73048
1894 started with 79009
Meaning, this particular design DRP 76975 was registered in 1893.

Thank you. I don't suppose there's any way to find out who got the patent.

Hi,
Found your registration number in 1899 advertisement.
It`s actually patent number for electroplating innovation described as `` most perfect and durable in the area of silver plating``
`` reinforced silver deposit on tines and resting areas a,b.c ``.
It seems that the name of the town (Geislingen) was more important than WMF trade name at the time.
That would explain ``Geislingen`` mark on your fork.
Hoping this helps. It was really exciting to discover the meaning of the patent.
Regards

Thank you SO MUCH! I never would have dug this up on my own. I like to think I know WMF marks, so learning this one is important.
