HN Squire & Sons - poorly marked hallmarks need help wit

Post by mschisel »

This spoon has 3 hallmarks which I cannot truly make out. The first looks like a star, but could be something else, the middle looks like a lion and the last could be a head. Then it is marked STERLING and has an overmark of H. N? Squire & Sons. The H. is stamped on top of the S. Does anyone have any information on this H. Squire & Sons and can you identify the time period and/or pattern. Thank you.

For information on Horatio Nelson Squire, see here

The partnership with his sons began c 1875/1877, when they came of age. It is not known how long it continued past the 1880 census, but his death in 1897 is an obvious outside limit.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I want to correct myself on one point...the H. is overstamped on the G in sterling. I wonder why these markings are so messy...
