HI all
Does anyone recognise this French maker? hard to capture clearly because of where its located and also a little rubbed from the lid opening and closing.
Letter E to left of diamond, Letter P to right of diamond, crown to top of diamond, unknown mark to bottom of diamond.
Thanks in advance.
Colin

Re: Help with French Maker
Hello
Your box was made by Edme Picard, specialist in snuff-boxes (la tabatière), mark EP, a crown and a crescent (une couronne et un croissant) in a lozenge-shaped reserve.
Picard registered this mark 4 times. First on 3 February 1849 when he was working at 114 rue St-Martin; second and third on 16 May 1856 when he was at 186 rue St-Martin; and fourth on 13 June 1860. His last mark was erased on 15 April 1874. Therefore Picard’s working dates were 1849-1874.
Regards.
See Arminjon, v. II, no. 01541, p. 154.

Nicolas Edme Picard
Born: 1 Jun 1810, Montargis, Loiret, son of Nicolas Picard & Anne Elisabeth Barthelemy
Married: 4 Apr 1837, Paris, 6th arrondissement, to Marie Pauline Desplat (1807-1890)
Died: 1877/1881
The exact date and place of his death has so far eluded me, but I have determined that it was between 1877 (when he is listed as a retired silversmith on the marriage record of his son, Charles Edme Picard, also a silversmith and living with him) and 1881 (when his widow filed to have her marriage to him re-recorded in the massive restoration project of the Parisian vital records that were destroyed during the Commune).
