Possible Hanau marks, but there are two sets!

Post by echo801 »

Hello,
I have a rather sweet silver basket/bowl.
I feel perhaps the style, and indeed one set of marks, would make the piece German in origin.
However there are two sets of marks; that I have photographed to the best of my ability and my camera's limitations.
The first set is: 930, butterfly?, arab script??, N crowned?
The second set is: SBL in a lozenge; sterling lion?; U in shield, this is a double stamp going over a duplicate; F in an oval, again double stamped and finally what looks like a leopards head, again double stamped.
Would welcome any information. Many thanks.

The second set of marks are London import marks.

SBL stands for Samuel Boyce Landeck. He was a British importer who had marks entered in London and Sheffield.
The F in an oval is the import mark. Check Here:
http://www.925-1000.com/importmarks.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The U in a shield date mark could be 1895. Can't see it well enough to be sure.

You're probably correct about the other marks being from Hanau, Germany.
I can't help you there, but I hope someone else will.

Pat.

Many thanks for the info about the import marks, very grateful.
Now I wonder if there is anybody out there that could confirm the origin of the strange quasi-oriental marks.
Thanks
